What Is Phonological Knowledge? Why is it important?

Phonemic knowledge  is the knowledge of sound- symbol relations and sound patterns represented in language. Distinct speech sounds in language.

Learning phonics will aid your child as they learn to read and write.  Knowing the sounds letters make as well as the sound letter combinations make will help your child as they decode words.

Tips For Parents: How can I work on Phonics with my kids at home?

-Read books with prosody
-Talk about the illustrations by labeling, and commenting on them
-Surround your child in literacy rich environments
-Match speech sounds to print
-Point out road signs, or store signs and begin to associate letters with sounds.
-Consonantly engage your child by talking to them at mealtime, in the car, at the playground, etc.
-Share books together
-Revisit familiar books
-Encourage your child to write and share their stories with you
-Practice spelling words and sounding them out.

Infants/ toddlers:

  2. I Spy Little Letters
  3. My First ABC

Preschoolers:

  1. Seuss’s ABC
  2. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
  3. Eating the Alphabet
  • Phonics Baskets.
  • Use blocks, or letter magnets to manipulate words.
  • During mealtime ask your child to tell you what letter the food starts with.

  1. Giraffes Can’t Dance

  3. How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?
  • Letter Clip activity 
  • Use Eklin boxes to decode words within the story
  • Work on finding words in the text that rhyme
  • APP: Kids ABC Train, teaches kids about letters and phonics sounds
